It was all smiles as the first cholecystectomy case was completed successfully by the team. The surgery went without any hitches. Our in-service team were present to assist with the setting up of equipment and preparation of the "Clickline®" instruments and "Endotip" trocars and System 5000® ESU. The in-service team also assisted in the supervising the reprocessing/sterilization of the instruments for the following cases.

The medical team was pleased and impressed with the many functions and ease of use of the new equipment. Of particular mention was the ConMed System 5000 electrosurgical unit which allowed the surgeon to change the power output from within the surgical field by simply double tapping the COAG/CUT buttons on the pencil. The fact that the OR nurses would no longer be running back and forth to the ESU, to change settings, everytime the surgeon required won beaming smiles and applause from the O.R. nursing team.

The Medical Grade 19" Flat Panel LCD monitor was not to be out done. Its display of vivid detail and accurate representation of colours drew comments of admiration from veteran laparoscopic surgeons who were use to the large Sony® Medical CRT monitors. There was great interest in the fact that, unlike the many dangers of using the Sony® CRT type monitors in an O.R. setting, the Medical flat panel LCD unit's power requirements is only 24 volts and that the unit is essentially sealed and does not have the typical vents that harboured dust and make the CRT type monitors a danger for liquid splashes and spills.

With the chronic shortage of qualified staff, busy waiting rooms and long working hours who is ensuring that sterilization is taking place. We are....automatically! The BHC A&E and UHWI Newborn have stepped up their facilities with the help of a local service organisation. They received multiparameter Analogic Lifegard vital signs monitors with carts, Medix Econoneb hospital nebulizers, wall diagnostic sets, a COSMO capnograph with digital pulse oximeter, handheld digital Novametrix pulse oximeters, GreenSpec fiber optic laryngoscopes, ASENA syringe pumps, Medix phototherapy lights, a Mortara ELI 250ij with cart and additional items. Training of BHC medical staff took place yesterday and will continue over the next few weeks.

Sleep Study Center - Up and running.

Well the installation and testing of the sleep study unit was completed and had it's first two patients. All went very smoothly, and the staff are extremely happy with the user interface and ease of operation. Additional equipment are to be added by September to include CPAP. Patient video capture/monitoring is exceptional. Offering high, colour detail, and IR black and white at night. The facility is "first world standard", ensuring patient comfort. The grand opening is planned within the next few weeks.

Sleep Study Center - First of its kind.

Quite a lot has been happening. We are in the process of install equipment for sleep studies. It will be the first of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean. The unit will feature state of the art equipment with installation and technical training scheduled for mid June.

Dietary Department measures Body Composition Measurements

Yesterday we did a workshop on the new Body Composition Analyser in the Dietary department at UHWI, Mona. head of the department, Ms. Hamilton was present and was keen on the features and ease of use that the unit offered. Senior assistant Nabeeha Dennis, dietician Melanie Blake and other staff members participated in the workshop. It was a pleasure working with them as they were enthusiastic and attentive, as was clearly indicated by their questions. We will be revisiting with the group shortly to provide information that they requested.
